東亞近代國際社會中的日本與台灣/ Japan and Taiwan in Modern East Asian International Society
The Meiji Restoration not only transformed Japan into a modern nation-state but also had profound impacts on international politics and society across East Asia. Following the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894, Japan acquired Taiwan in 1895. Much of the record of Japan’s rule and administration of Taiwan is preserved in the official documents of the Government-General of Taiwan (the Taiwan Sōtokufu Archives), currently housed in the Taiwan Historica of the National Archives.
This course introduces research on the Taiwan Sōtokufu Archives and examines how the Government-General of Taiwan exercised governance and administration. At the same time, it aims to familiarize students with the use of these administrative documents as historical sources. The course is structured in three parts: first, an introduction to general theories of colonial governance in Taiwan; second, case studies on specific aspects of governance; and finally, an exploration of the Taiwan Sōtokufu administrative archives and their applications.
