近代東亞文明新秩序/New Civilizational Order in Modern East Asia

Since the mid-nineteenth century, East Asia has faced mounting challenges from the Western powers. Both the Qing Empire and Japan were compelled to accelerate reforms in order to adapt to the emerging international order. This course, taught by leading experts, will examine from multiple perspectives how East Asian countries entered into modern international relations, interacted with Western powers, and navigated the dynamics of competition and cooperation among themselves.

Another central theme is the lived experience of East Asian peoples amid this profound transformation: how they moved and lived within the region, how relations between states and their populations were reshaped, and how individuals and communities remembered and responded to this new order.
